Peter Inglis - Bio
I have performed most of the popular styles of music on electric and acoustic guitars, and in just about every conceivable type of venue! Nowadays I mainly perform with my own ensembles, play String Quartet Classics by Bach, Mozart and Vivaldi with the the pieces rearranged to feature the Guitar. In solo performances I range from Latin and Jazz through to Baroque and Classical. ( listen and watch videos of my performances Contact my management at www.prideaux-e.com. My website is at www.thewholeguitarist.com , where you can get more information about guitar playing, my performances, tuition and other publications. My StudiesMy institution of choice has been in performing to the general public. In this arena one finds out very quickly what really works in performance practice and repertoire. However nobody truly stands alone and this is especially true in the art of musical performance. I have drawn on a variety of sources and been lucky enough to have had the acquaintance and guidance of some wonderful musicians, performers and human beings over the years. Alexander TechniqueOver the years I have had private study with various Sydney practitioners. In the course of developing "Scales and Arpeggios and How to Play Them - 1998" and then "Guitar Playing and how it works" I was guided by Rhonda Hartwig-Janes who maintains busy practices in Newcastle and Sydney.
Jazz Improvisation and ArrangingJazz Improvisation and Arranging with John Neeme at the NSW Conservatorium of Music and Jazz Guitar with Devendran Gopalasamay. John and Dev are two of Sydney's leading guitarists and arrangers.Classical GuitarKen Burns has been a staple of the Sydney guitar scene for decades. He introduced me to the work of Abel Carlevaro. Roland Chadwick showed me how to work in detail.Piano, Eurhythmics and Classical Style.I studied for a number of years with Joanne Callinan, who introduced me to some of the main schools of piano pedagogy, including the work of "rotationist" Tobias Matthay and "fixationist" James Ching.I also attended several of her groups classes in "Eurhythmics" and in fact the principles of this approach to bodily movement and musical expression informed much of her teaching. Eurhythmics insists that rhythm, articulation and dynamics in musical performance must arise from bodily movement. Joanne also made me aware by discussion and illustration in music about the inseparable links between musical styles and the architecture and culture of the time. For this alone I owe her eternal thanks for re-sparking my interest in music. Also important to me was her astute and kind criticism of my performanced, judged by purely musical standards and unaffected by any notions of guitar technical dogma. From my studies with her I learned that technique starts with imagination. This page illustrates an excerpt from "Guitar Playing and how it works"
