Performances -
1979 - 1981 - Timeless
In 1979 I was playing in a covers band and
Steve Hunter
auditioned for the bass gig. Discovering a mutual obsession with the music of
John McLaughlin and Chick Corea we wasted no time in setting up our own outfit.
Advertising for a drummer we scored Tony Buck - only 16 and already playing all the
Cobham repertoire with more than a few personal touches.
The next 4 or 5 years was a period of intense music making and
growth. We were constantly seeking out new information, devouring the
jazz history and as soon as we got sight of a new concept - putting it into
practice with long hours of playing together.
Jammin' with Tony Buck
Tony Buck - drums
Steve Hunter - fretless bass
All through 1979 our trio "Timeless" rehearsed 2 or 3 times a week, often
in all night sessions at our private practice studio - the basement of an old office block
next door to "The Basement" - a famous Sydney Jazz venue.
We called our venue "The Dungeon" and often had crowds of friends
listening in or jamming along.
Double necked guitars were de rigeur in the fusion field in those days.
My Ibanez was a great sounding guitar with an expressive jumbo - fretted
neck - but so
weighty
that I would have a bruised right hip after a night's jamming!.
Towards the end we added a keyboard player - "Harry Baumeweig"
who added his mellifluous Rhodes sounds to our raw energy.
And then of course,
Kevin Hunt
who you can hear on these excerpts from our rehearsal sessions in 1981.
What these performances may lack in finesse - they certainly make up for in energy !

SPANISH - LATIN
A Chick Corea tune - I pick it up here near the end, with a sustaining
guitar melody in the Santana / DiMeola vein and a cadenza at
00 : 57 which resolves at 1:10.

Note that the recording quality is poor as the originals were on cassette,
I have attempted to clean them up a bit but there is a lot of hiss.

SWING
Another original composition by Steve Hunter. I was obviously thinking a lot about inside / outside (sideslipping) pentatonics at that time !
