My Studies My institution of choice has been in performing to the general public. In this arena one finds out very quickly what really works in performance practice and repertoire. However nobody truly stands alone and this is especially true in the art of musical performance. I have drawn on a variety of sources and been lucky enough to have had the acquaintance and guidance of some wonderful musicians, performers and human beings over the years. Alexander Technique Over the years I have had private study with various Sydney practitioners. Jazz Improvisation and Arranging Jazz Improvisation and Arranging with John Neeme at the NSW Conservatorium of Music and Jazz Guitar with Devendran Gopalasamay. John and Dev are two of Sydney's leading guitarists and arrangers. Classical Guitar Ken Burns has been a staple of the Sydney guitar scene for decades. Ken has such incredible control over tone and timbre.. . I remember standing outside the lesson room one day listening to a beautiful guitar duet.... But when I walked in the room - you guessed it - it was Ken playing solo guitar ! I could have sworn... |
Piano, Eurhythmics and Classical Style. I studied for a number of years with Joanne Callinan, who introduced me to some of the main schools of piano pedagogy, including the work of "rotationist" Tobias Matthay and "fixationist" James Ching. I also attended several of her groups classes in "Eurhythmics" and in fact the principles of this approach to bodily movement and musical expression informed much of her teaching. Eurhythmics insists that rhythm, articulation and dynamics in musical performance must arise from bodily movement. Joanne also made me aware by discussion and illustration in music about the inseparable links between musical styles and the architecture and culture of the time. Possibly the most important legacy of my time with Ms. Callinan was her astute criticism of my performanced, judged by purely musical standards and unaffected by any notions of guitar technical dogma. Violin performance and pedagogy. I have been lucky enough to play with Ian Cooper for the past 10 years. I taught him a few things about jazz and he has exposed me in his playing to the virtuoso traditions of violinism as taught him by Harry Kirby and Chris Kimber, as well as the Suzuki Method as taught by his mother Jan Cooper. Our many hundreds of performances together with my group - ( see my acts ) - (Peter Inglis Quartet) and Ian Cooper's Northern Strings have enabled me to explore the world of Chamber Music and develop a style of arranging guitar parts for the popular classical repertoire.
