BAR 1: LEFT HAND

This section begins with the humble C Major chord. Easy to play for most, but also an opportunity to start building the foundations of a good technique.

The first step in playing this or any other chord is to:

Visually locate the target notes on the guitar neck.

Next, look for a main axis, or straight line connecting these notes.

s

Now bring the left arm up to the
guitar neck.

Adjust the elbow position until the
fingers are aligned with the target notes.

Now by expanding the posture as
explained in the first section of this book,
let the indicated fingers touch the strings
as indicated.
The fingertips should touch the strings
just behind the frets.

  BAR 1: RIGHT HAND

As described in the 1st part of this book, the Right Hand executes a basic strumming motion with the thumb.

The strum commences on the 5th string and continues to the 2nd string.

Notes for Teachers.

LOOPING
Introduce the concept of "looping" phrases or measures at this point. This bar, or indeed any group of notes can be repeated in a continous loop.

Q: How many notes should
be in a practice loop?

A: This depends entirely on the prowess and development of the individual student.
Make the section to be repeated very clear by drawing large repeat signs directly onto the score, use of coloured highlight pens helps in this respect.
