Abel Carlevaro

Cuaderno No.2 - Technique for the Right Hand

Carlevaro intended this book to be used in conjunction with his School of the Guitar, in which he explains the various types of "touch" to be applied to the voices and how to practice the exercises.

You must at the same time bear in mind that the repertoire this book is based on did not call for the kinds of right hand techniques you will find in Flamenco music or indeed the transcriptions by people such as Kazuhito Yanmashita in Mussorgsky - Pictures at an Exhibition.

That is not a damning indictment because what book does provide a complete map? As it stands this is a landmark achievment in defnining Guitar Technique and isolating the techniques involved.

Carl Flesch said of the Szevcik exercises for violin:
".. they are like a very strong medicine... in small doses they will cure, but large doses can be fatal! "

The same warning should apply to this book and all books of technical exercises.

The main value of this book is that it provides a pretty good breakdown - a template if you like - of elements involved in Right Hand technique. I feel the best way to use it is as a springboard for developing your own exercises. based on the repertoire you are playing .

As it stands this is a landmark achievment in defining Guitar Technique and isolating the techniques involved.
