Guitar tuition - "Baroque to Rock" - Rock, Pop, Blues, Jazz and Classical Guitar in Sydney, Australia

A typical lesson plan

Guitar Tuition with Peter Inglis in Sydney, Australia - click here for more details
We cover these 3 bases each lesson:
  1. Technique and knowledge of the guitar neck.
  2. "Easy" Classical repertoire.
  3. Classical and Rock / Jazz repertoire.

1. Technique and knowledge of the guitar neck.

We need to cover certain technical and musical bases --every lesson-- . This is the idea behind 1 hour lessons, to go into more depth on the 'how to practice' and make sure that the melodic and harmonic material in your repertoire is being properly and thoroughly learned.

This material is covered in my book -

Guitar Playing and How it Works
"Guitar Playing and how it works"

.

Those players who are at a more advanced level and into moveable scale positions will use :

Modern Method for Guitar - Book 1 Modern Method for Guitar - Book 2
Modern Method for Guitar

... as a recipe book to enable you to play lots of tunes and chords in the next category, "Easy Classical".:

2. "Easy" Classical repertoire.

As I mentioned already to some students, it takes a lot of time for me to do special arrangements of your repertoire. So there are two solutions to that.
  1. better source material
  2. get up to speed on creating your own guitar version quickly
To that end I have tracked down this great resource. Actually a colleague of mine had it - but not in a suitable format for us (too small). Here -

CLASSICAL FAKE BOOKS
CLASSICAL FAKE BOOKS

... where I also explain how this fits my teaching concept. So please get a copy of this book. It will serve us very well for quite some time!

The lessons learned from this repertoire will serve you well. Oh and by the way you will be expected to be able to play a new tune from this book every lesson. Don't worry - we'll start with the easy ones.

This approach is a time-efficient way to get a taste of the repertoire and styles, and learn how to make music quickly.

3. Classical and Rock / Jazz repertoire.

Meanwhile you can all keep working on the more challenging repertoire - the etudes, preludes, rock pieces etc. This kind of repertoire usually takes more than a week or two to perfect. It may take months! That's OK, it is worth learning. But what we don't want to do is slow down your total rate of acquisition of new material to this slower pace. Your brain can absorb a lot of music quickly, so we want to keep pouring in the easy stuff at the same time.

With this general format and at one lesson per fortnight, at the end of a year you will have gained :

Easy repertoire - 25 pieces at 3 minutes = 75 minutes
Harder repertoire - maybe 10 pieces at 3 minutes = 30 minutes

TOTAL = 105 minutes.

That is 105 minutes of NEW repertoire you can play confidently and musically. And the easy repertoire you will also be able to play solo AND with other players.
